Empowering Youth Through English Folk Arts Workshops
Shooting Roots has been providing immersive workshops in the English folk arts at folk festivals for 30 years. Our team of talented tutors lead workshops for 12-17 years olds in traditional band, craft, dance, theatre, ceilidh, and storytelling skills.
Over the years Shooting Roots has also run residentials, organised ceilidhs, and been involved in as many folky activities as we've been able. If you want us for anything folk related, youth related, or (even better) youth folk related, we'll do our best to be there.
As an organisation we are volunteer-led, recruiting our tutors at the beginning of each year. We are always keen to hear from new potential tutors, so if you think this is for you, get in touch and we'll make sure you know when recruitment starts.
Tutor Team Structure
Whether you're an ace accordionist, a marvellous morris dancer, a wonderful whittler, or a terrific thespian, you're likely to find a place in our tutor team structure. There are 3 'roles' in each tutor strand:
Trainee (Voluntary role): If you've never tutored with us before and just want to give it a go - developing your skills while helping young people develop theirs, then being a Shooting Roots Trainee Tutor might be for you.
Core (Voluntary role): If you've tutored with us before and are confident that you can run sections of the workshop, or start taking on a little more responsibility, being a core tutor might be for you. You might also be suitable for this role if you're a confident youth leader/tutor elsewhere and are very confident in your craft, but haven't worked with Shooting Roots before.
Lead (Paid role): If you're an experienced youth leader/tutor, you've got experience with how Shooting Roots works, and you are super, super confident in your craft, being a lead tutor might be for you. Our leads are DBS checked and take responsibility for the running of the workshop as well as its pre-planning.
